Psychology of the Deaf

I believe that psychology of the Deaf textbooks should not be written at all. When the hearing certified psychologists do Wechsler Adult Intelligence, Wechsler Intelligence scale for Children, Wechsler Pre-school and Primary Scale of Intelligence testing with the deaf and hard of hearing children and adults. The psychologists found that the deaf and hard of hearing children have low intelligience levels and mental retardation. The psychologists believed that their scores are accurate, but the deaf and hard of hearing children and adults do well in their education and lives. I know that psychologist told some of my friends that they could not go to college because of the scores. My friends went to college and graduated from college.

The psychology is the study of mind and behavior. Why do the psychologists need to probe the minds of the deaf and hard of hearing people? There is nothing wrong with the deaf and hard of hearing people's minds.

If the book you are talking about is by Helmer Myklebust, that sounds familiar. I studied from it in grad school back in the 70's and at that time it was uncritically accepted.

We discussed it on the basis of biased tests that were made with hearing standards and made deaf look bad in comparison. Other tests such as IQ and personality tests also made deaf look bad.

Today we are more aware of how test results can be skewed by differences in education, family atmosphere, opportunities available, and social environment.

Also we are more aware that we learn more from comparing people with others in the same group, not against people in different groups.

we need to do psychology of hearing. why are hearing people working with deaf people? what are their motivations? there are plenty of questions we can learn from studying hearing people.

Hello commenters, thanks for your time leaving the comments. I have learned something more from you - especially those tests for the students. The tests tends to be unbaised..

Good riddance that the book is no longer in use for the colleges, however I found one on the EBay for $9.95. I'm not sure if I want to buy it, ha.

Thanks, Kim
